One of the premier juvenile races of the season, the next edition of the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) is set to run at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday February 22, 2014.

While it is still many months away the race is already on for a spot in the coveted Blue Diamond Stakes field with all current nominees also getting a bonus entry into the Blue Sapphire for three year olds next year.

Victoria dominated the Blue Diamond Stakes 2014 nominations with 581 entrants from the races home state.

One of the most notable of those at this early stage is the BC3 Thoroughbred owned Redoute’s Choice youngster nicknamed “Jimmy”.

“Jimmy” is prepared by the father and sons’ training team John, Wayne and Michael Hawkes and was the $5 million half-brother to superstar mare Black Caviar.

Following Victorian contingent is then 340 nominees from NSW and 75 from South Australia.

Among the Adelaide hopefuls are 11 from this year’s winning trainer Daniel Clarken who stole the show with his smart filly Miracles Of Life.

“We learned this year that if you don’t nominate your yearlings at the outset, you’ll need to fork out $55,000 to run!” Clarken said.

“The majority are owned by Teeley Assets but including the couple we specked ourselves, all look like being early prospects that should give us a real chance.

“When they’re strong and natural yearlings at first entry time, they have to be nominated.”

Teeley Assets own the reigning Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles Of Life and also won the 1999 race with Redoute’s Choice.

Redoute’s Choice is now currently one of Australia’s premier sires and is represented in the 2014 Blue Diamond entries by 33 of his progeny, equal with Snitzel.

The leading sire by leaps and bounds is Fastnet Rock with 73 followed then by Northern Meteor with 40.

As for the best represented nominees David Hayes is the dominant trainer with 84 entries.

Hayes has enjoyed training five Blue Diamond Stakes winners over the years and came close this year having prepared the 2013 runner-up Fast ‘N’ Rocking.

Mick Price follows on 70 before Sydney’s leading lady of racing and premier juvenile trainer Gai Waterhouse with 67.

Darley Australia and their head trainer Peter Snowden also have 63 entries, their latest success in the classic having been back in 2010 with super colt Sepoy.

The 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes first acceptances will be taken on Tuesday November 19 followed by second declarations on January 7, 2014.

Third acceptors will be released three weeks later before the Blue Diamond Stakes final field is out on February 15.
