Wawail Destined For 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes Start

December 12th, 2013

Wawail is already making progress towards the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes after winning the 100 metre Beveridge Williams Plate at Caulfield yesterday.

The classy two-year-old won her debut run by almost a length and is now being set towards the $1 million blue Diamond Stakes.

Wawail is trained by David Hayes and his Melbourne stable representative, Lizzie Jelfs, believes the filly is capable of winning the Group 1 race.

“She’s had a very good preparation and has done nothing but impress us at home,” Jelfs said.

“Obviously under race pressure we wanted to see how she would go but she has impressed us again today.”

Jockey Chad Schofield rides track work for the Hayes’ stable and agreed with Jelfs description of Wawail.

“She’s just one of the many nice ones (in the stable). She came in today very fit and well educated. She’s got a bright future,” Schofield said.

Schofield won aboard Wawail in her debut race after returning from a three week suspension.

“I had two consecutive suspensions and was out for the best part of three weeks,” Schofield said.

“But on the plus side I had time to recharge and refresh after the spring carnival and I’m back now and looking forward to getting stuck into it again.”
