2014 Blue Diamond Stakes Attracts Talented Final Field

February 18th, 2014

The final field for the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) has been released, and has confirmed a highly anticipated showdown between star filly Earthquake and exciting colt Rubick will happen at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend.

Having claimed early favouritism for the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes after comfortably dispatching the fields in the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) and Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies (1000m), Earthquake’s claims on a third win from as many starts took a huge hit this morning when drawing the unfortunate gate 15 in the barrier draw.

Trainer Peter Snowden is confident the Exceed And Excel filly can overcome the wide-draw, but had conceded the task at hand is now substantially more difficult.

Having also recorded a perfect start to his two race career so far, Rubick followed up a resounding win in the TAB IPhone App Plate (1000m) with a commanding win over Jabali and Chivalry in the Blue Diamond Prelude event for colts and geldings (1000m) at Caulfield two weeks ago.

Drawing the slightly more favourable barrier 10, Rubick has jumped out to outright favouritism for the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes, but will need to find good position early if he is to beat Jabali, whose claims on 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes success received a huge boost when drawing the ideal barrier 3.

Having jumped awkwardly in both of his competitive starts to date, classy colt Jabali has displayed a keen ability to both overcome a wide barrier (something that will not be necessary in the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes) and run on strongly in the dying stages of a race, breaking from the pack to finish second in both the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) and Blue Diamond Prelude C&G.

Placing third behind Rubick and Jabali in the Blue Diamond Prelude C&G two weeks, Chivalry opened his so-far strong racing career second behind I Am The General in the Leadwest Plate (1000m) before following up with a strong two-length win over classy colt Bugatty in the Quest Moonee Valley Plate (1000m).

Trainer Mark Kavanagh has underlined the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) as the major target for the Street Cry colt this preparation, however will is in prime form and position (barrier 5) ahead of the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes.

A capacity field of 16 has been confirmed for the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, with Jerome Hunter-saddled Statue Of Warriors added as cover for any possible scratchings.
