2015 Blue Diamond Stakes the Target for Thurlow

November 19th, 2014

Having appeared on track just twice competitively since debuting to racing during the 2014 Spring Carnival, trainer Robert Smerdon is confident classy two-year-old Thurlow will figure as a serious chance of success in the 2015 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) after recovering to take out the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) at Sandown over the weekend.

Jumping from the gates only fairly, Thurlow was forced to settle off the pace of the race’s early leaders and appeared out of contention when blocked for a run just 400m from the post, but pushed clear and displayed an exceptional turn of foot to poke a head clear of closest rival Miss Gidget over the line.

Understandably pleased with the Sebring filly’s ability to overcome several impositions during the Merson Cooper Stakes, Smerdon said he has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by Thurlow since first arriving at his Caulfield stables and confirmed the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes will figure as the major target over the Autumn Racing Carnival.

“That was painful. I thought she was would up with the leaders,” Smerdon said following the Merson Cooper Stakes.

“She has always shown talent and it is good she won because this is a Black Type race.

“She has not furnished yet and now she will go for a break and come back for the autumn, with the Blue Diamond her aim.”

Renowned jockey Craig Williams took the ride on Thurlow in the Merson Cooper Stakes and is excited by the two-year-old’s prospects leading into 2015 and the Blue Diamond Stakes.

“I had every faith in her,” Williams said.

“She raced on the pace at Flemington and she came from midfield today so that is a good sign.

“She has a fantastic attitude and does everything right.”

Running third in a strong Cranbourne barrier trial prior to her competitive debut on October 20th, Thurlow debuted to racing on Melbourne Cup Day; placing a commendable second to Antelucan in the Group 3 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m).
