Possible 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes Bid for Giulietta

January 5th, 2015

Gai Waterhouse has named the Blue Diamond Stakes 2015 in February as a possible Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival aim for her smart young filly Giulietta after her win on debut in Sydney over the weekend.

The Snitzel two-year-old won a barrier trial at Randwick in mid-December showing blistering speed in a nice effort showing off her potential and being declared as a juvenile to watch.

She backed up that form and lived up to the hype then on January 3 at Rosehill Gardens with her easy two and a half-length win over I’m Not Sure in the $85,000 TAB Place Multi Plate (1100m).

Originally nominated for the lucrative $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in Queensland this Saturday, Waterhouse has confirmed the filly won’t be accepting for the race.

Instead of putting her on the short one-week turnaround with a testing interstate trip, Sydney’s leading lady of racing will save Giulietta for a return to Rosehill on January 31 in the $150,000 Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on Expressway Stakes Day.

Her Widden Stakes performance will then determine whether Waterhouse and connections press ahead with tentative plans for a trip to Victoria to target the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse on February 28.

“She won’t run in the Magic Millions,” Waterhouse told The Daily Telegraph.

“We will wait until the end of the month and run her in the Widden Stakes before maybe taking her to Melbourne for the Blue Diamond.”

Waterhouse is a five-time Golden Slipper winning trainer but a Blue Diamond win has remained elusive for her, something she hopes to change in 2015.

While she’s not currently nominated for the Blue Diamond Stakes, Giulietta is one of the top early fancies in the futures markets led by the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontiton at around $5.

Turffontein filly Fontiton hit the top of the Blue Diamond odds after a blistering six length victory at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day back in October in the $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m), a fantastic effort that saw her lead all the way before an explosive finish.

Fontiton gets the chance to secure her spot as Blue Diamond Stakes favourite this coming autumn when she returns to racing on January 26 in the $120,000 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) at Sandown on January 26.

“If she progresses well and everything falls into place, her first-up aim will be the Preview on Australia Day,” Smerdon told AAP on Sunday.
