Mesa to Trial Ahead of 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes Campaign

January 13th, 2015

Confirmed in second declarations for the year’s first Group 1 event for two-year-olds, trainer John O’Shea has revealed classy black type placegetter Mesa is will appear amongst seven juveniles to trial at Sandown on Tuesday ahead of a campaign geared towards the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28th.

Running a close second in a strong Warwick Farm barrier trial prior to his racing debut on October 27th, Mesa jumped from the gates well in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) on November 15th; receiving an ideal run in transit after settling mid-pack and displaying a commendable turn of foot to place third behind Thurlow and Miss Gidget.

Understandably pleased with the form and class displayed by the Lonhro colt over his short racing tenure so far, O’Shea told AAP he is aiming to have two colts and two fillies in each of the Blue Diamond Preview events on January 26th and is excited by Godolphin’s prospect of two-year-old black type success this season.

“Obviously Mesa is very smart and there’s some quite nice fillies there that will trial,” O’Shea said.

“There’s a filly who trialled in Sydney called Promenades who will come down and run in the Preview.

“I probably thought we’d have two fillies and two colts in each version (of the Previews).

“Mesa would run in the colts race and we’ve got a couple of colts running in Sydney in the next fortnight that quite feasibly could come down.”

Perched just three weeks prior to the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), to be run at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on March 21st, O’Shea revealed there is every chance Godolphin will field runners in the Blue Diamond Stakes on their way towards an appearance in the world’s richest two-year-old race.

“You could have one run (in Sydney) then come down for the Blue Diamond, or run in the Prelude and then run in the Blue Diamond and then go up and run in the Slipper,” O’Shea added.

“It’s something we’ve got to give consideration to. It’s a Group One race.”

Leading online bookie is yet to confirm betting markets for the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes, however currently rank Mesa an outside $81 chance for success in the Golden Slipper.
