Fontiton Consolidates 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes Favouritism

January 27th, 2015

A leading chance for success following an impressive debut victory in October, talented filly Fontiton has consolidated her early favouritism for the 2015 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) after securing a tight victory in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview F (1000m) on Monday.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Mark Zahra dropped Fontiton off the pace of the race’s early leaders after striking early interference from leaders caught on the fence.

Receiving a good run in transit, the daughter of Turffontein displayed a strong turn of foot over the final straight at Sandown to hit the line a third of a length in the clear of closest rival Haybah.

Pleased with the overall feel offered up by Fontiton for success in the Blue Diamond Preview, Zahra told Racing Victoria he believes class willed the two-year-old to the line, having showed signs of slowing up over the race’s dying stages.

“She jumped up in the air at the start a little bit and I wanted to get away from a couple that were on the fence and had I stayed in she probably would have won a bit more comfortably but I wanted to make a good thing of her,” Zahra said.

“I reckon she’d probably had enough 100 metres out but class prevailed in the end.

“It’s easy to just go out and lead every start and then you’re susceptible in the Blue Diamond but for her to come from behind today and still pick up like she did was great.

“It’s only her second start and even with the boom on her she’s still very green but I couldn’t ask for much more from her today.”

Assistant to trainer Robert Smerdon, Stuart Webb was on hand to witness Fontiton’s brave Blue Diamond Preview victory and confirmed the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) will figure as her next point of call ahead of the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes two weeks later.

“At the furlong (200m mark) she was going to cruise up and win by two (lengths) then over the last 100 her fitness gave out,” Webb said.

“I think we’ll go to the Prelude and the Blue Diamond will be her third run in, they’re hard races and you don’t want to go there unfit.”

Winning a strong Cranbourne barrier trial prior to her competitive debut, Fontiton claimed early favouritism for the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes after beating a classy field to the line in the $252,000 Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day. is currently offering the best 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes odds, for which Fontiton registers as outright $4.60 favourite ahead of Secret Agenda ($5), Ottoman ($9) and Burnstone ($11).
