Stoker Capable of 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes Upset

February 25th, 2015

Having found exceptional form leading into the feature race, trainer Tony McEvoy is confident talented two-year-old Stoker is more than capable of success in Saturday’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Claiming minor place finishes in each of his first two starts, Stoker stamped his claims as a serious Blue Diamond prospect in the Inglis Premier (1000m) last time out on February 7th; displaying a keen turn of foot late to hit the line close to two lengths in the clear of closest rival Manhattan Blues.

Allocated the ideal barrier 6 and confirmed to be partnered by champion hoop Damien Oliver, McEvoy is confident the Written Tycoon gelding is a legitimate chance of success, particularly after working well early this week.

“He just came up my hill at 14 to the furlong,” McEvoy told Racing Ahead.

“I didn’t think that he needed a gallop, he looks pretty fit and I don’t really want him any better than he was the other day.

“We decided not to gallop him and he seemed really bright and well.

“I think that he has the right talent.

“If you think back to his first start when he made terrible mistakes in that race at Moonee Valley and ran second to Headwater, Damien and I thought that we would have given that horse a real race if he had not missed the start.

“That form looks pretty strong now and he has done very well since.

“He has the ability to sit right on a strong speed and he can finish strong.

“He is fast, he has good speed and very few two-year-olds can work with your older horses, but he has matched with any older horse that I have got and that is always a very good sign.”

Running second to Golden Slipper favourite Headwater in the Cactus Imaging Plate (100m) on debut, Stoker overcame an early check to finish third in the James Boag’s Premium 2.y.o Plate (1000m) in his only other start prior to his Inglis Premier triumph.
