Browne Confident of Back-to-Back Success in Blue Diamond Stakes

February 27th, 2015

Damian Browne partnered talented filly Earthquake to success in the 2014 edition of the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and is confident he is in a great position to defend his crown on Saturday aboard leading colt Pride Of Dubai.

While yet to break through for a maiden race win, Pride Of Dubai is also yet to finish outside the tip three over his short racing tenure, and stamped his claims as a serious racing prospect last time out when hitting the line in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) a short head off the pace of winner Of The Brave.

Thrilled to have retained the ride on the Street Cry colt for his maiden Group 1 assault on Saturday, Browne told Racing Victoria he hopes to repay trainers Peter and Paul Snowden for their continued support of his riding style.

“Our relationship probably goes back four or five years ago when they were bringing a few horses up to Queensland for the winter carnival and their main jockey Kerrin (McEvoy) wasn’t coming up for the first part of the carnival so I was able to ride a couple and had some success,” Browne said of his tenure with the Snowdens.

“I was probably fairly lucky to get the ride on Earthquake, Kerrin was on her and then he had a fall and wasn’t able to ride her in the Prelude and I was able to win that and then he wasn’t back in time for the Blue Diamond.

“It was a great thrill particularly to win for Peter and Paul Snowden who have been great supporters of mine and to win a big race for them made it extra special.”

Pleased with the feel offered up by Pride Of Dubai in his most recent start, Browne will aim to settled the two-year-old on the heels of the race’s early leaders before a late dash upon arriving on the final straight.

“I think he is the one out of the rest of the field that can beat her to be honest,” Browne said of favourite Fontiton.

“She (Fontiton) may need a touch of luck to get away from the fence and I think if I’m able to be close enough to her on straightening we might be able to give it a shake.

“It would be nice to only be third pair back, I can imagine Fontiton taking a sit and letting the speed come across from her outside,” he said.

“She’ll probably box-seat on the fence so if I could be in the third pair I won’t be too far off her.”
